Saving Snow

In Colorado, we get a lot of snow and have a lot of opportunities to get out and experience its beauty. However, we aren’t always considering everything that snow does for us and what we need to do to protect it.

Ukraine & Climate Action

In October of 2021, the United Kingdom rejected Shell's Jackdaw gas field project over concerns of grave environmental threats. In July of 2022, the project was hastily approved. This quick decision change was grounded after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine cut off major fossil fuel supplies to western countries. Sadly, the Ukrainian invasion isn’t the only thing heating up this summer. Europe is grappling with blistering temperatures that have melted roads, shut down schools, and ignited unprecedented wildfires. While it may be easier to calm energy demands in the short term by financing fossil fuel infrastructure, this choice threatens long-term energy security and the fight against climate change.

Crypto and Climate Change

Cryptocurrency has received massive popularity in recent years, receiving both praise and scrutiny. Many say that crypto will change the world; others say it’s a scam. Regardless of that, cryptocurrency has had an undeniable impact on the environment. So what exactly is that impact?

Turning the Sahara Solar

In a time of crisis and with rising environmental concerns, many people question if we could use the largest desert in the world to solve our energy problems. Despite what many opponents of climate change say, climate change is real. One of the biggest things contributing to climate change is the energy sector, filled with deadly fossil-fueled systems. Along with that, the global electricity system is inequitable: 600 million African people are without access to electricity. So given the fact that the Sahara Desert 3.552 million square miles and appears to be an ideal location for solar panels, why aren’t there any there now?

Coffee Shop Cutlery

Plastic utensils and lids are used extremely often in places like coffee shops, where they are typically used for a short stir or as a top to a drink and are then quickly thrown away. But these utensils are not harmless. Plastic cutlery poses one of the most dangerous threats to birds, turtles, and mammals due to the centuries it takes for plastic to break down. In fact, it is estimated that there are over 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic garbage floating in oceans across the world. It turns out that people’s morning coffee routines are leading to a massive impact on the environment.

Paper vs. Plastic Money

Since the late 1980s, many countries around the world have been switching their traditional cotton paper banknotes to polymer alternatives. Around 60 different countries across the globe at least partially use polymer banknotes, notably Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and China. Polymer money is more durable, dirt resistant, and counterfeit-safe than paper money, and various places such as the bank of the UK have claimed that it’s more environmentally friendly than paper notes. Other sources say that polymer money produces more carbon per note than cotton paper ones. So which is greener? Should we in the United States make the switch?

Why should I download Change Carbon?

Did you know this app was created by a group of high school students living in Denver, Colorado? Change Carbon is the only climate action app built by youth for youth. Our mission is to combine individual and collective action with our carbon calculator, collection of 100+ articles, and expansive forest page. Your monthly donation directly supports this mission and a brighter future.

What does Go Golden mean?

Reducing your carbon footprint is the first step to reducing your environmental impact. However, it is inevitable to have an impact on the environment. Carbon offsetting is the process of canceling out all your emissions. By planting trees with high CO2 absorption rates, Change Carbon will neutralize your carbon footprint. Go Golden and become carbon neutral today! Plus, you’ll get exclusive access to the Golden theme, making your forest shine. You will gain unique functions like offline sync and group creation. Most impactfully, you’ll help fund the free trees we plant as rewards for completing tasks, writing articles, and submitting tips.

Why should we plant trees?

Trees are the most effective way to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thus slowing down climate change. They not only purify the air but also filter the water we drink, provide habitats to over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity, and supply 1.6 billion jobs. We plant trees through our project partner, Trees for the Future. Unlike traditional tree planting initiatives, our trees are planted in Forest Gardens located in developing regions. Various species, including fruit and nut trees, provide substance to local communities. In fact, at the end of the four-year Forest Garden program, farmers have an average of 58 species of trees, 12 varieties of vegetables, and a 400% increase in their annual income. Heal the planet and its people by carbon offsetting with Change Carbon!

I first learned about the climate crisis in my middle school during a South Platte Water testing project. After seeing the pollution in our waters, I realized it extended into their air, land, and ocean. Climate change impacts you no matter who you are or where you come from or who you are.

Climate change is the largest problem that currently faces humanity, and we must work toward managing it while we still can. Since I was very young I have been hearing about the worsening of the climate, and I hope to make a difference with Light CO2 and the Change Carbon app.

By being a part of Light CO2, I am making a change in the greatest crises that faces humanity. While completing a few tasks might seem simple, it is through daily action that we can make sustainability a core value of our communities. I hope to continue supporting others in this goal.

I love being able to lower my carbon footprint. This app is something permanent that people can use, and we’ve been working hard on getting it to you. So as a person who often works against climate change I hope you can enjoy doing that yourself.

Climate change is growing at a hazardous pace and our futures depend on us taking action. By simply changing small aspects of our daily routines, we can finally create a sustainable future for our generation and the generations to come. The clock is ticking and we have no time to waste!
